Overseas Training

Ullswater Camp

We offer a tailored and dedicated service to meet your needs. After your initial contact, we come into school to discuss your requirements and meet members of staff. We work with you to design a tailor-made programme that suits your school and young people. A typical programme includes:


  • Presentation to parents and participants (if required).
  • Participants and Parents Information Pack, including kit list, rucksack packing diagram, and ideas for food.

Training & Planning

2 days of training & planning for the expeditions, either as 2 separate days or combined into a 2-day residential camp. At Gold level, this will be in a Wild Country area.

Day 1

A full day’s training trek, accompanied by one of our leaders per expedition team, covering the following objectives:

  • Navigation – Map and Compass Skills, and confidence in identifying features and navigating.
  • Countryside Code and respecting the countryside
  • Observation & Recording – linking into a team’s Aim
  • First Aid & Emergency Procedures – discussions and scenarios in the field and dealing with expedition incidents.
  • Identifying and Managing Risks – including dealing with animals and livestock and handling “being lost”.
  • Impact of weather – how weather affects kit, food, navigation and morale.
  • Team Building – working in expedition teams and getting on with others.
  • Campcraft & cooking skills, including safe handling of fuel, are covered at the end of the day or as part of a camp.

Day 2

Additional training and preparation for the expeditions, including:

  • Planning Workshop – Planning Practice & Qualifying Expeditions, completing routecards and deciding Aim.
  • Food & Menu Planning – including completion of menu plans
  • Equipment & Rucksack Packing – discussion and demo on what to bring, what to leave behind, and how to pack.

At Gold level, we also deliver a separate 1-day Planning Workshop immediately following the Practice Expedition, so that participants can plan their Qualifying Expedition.

Practice & Qualifying Expeditions

  • Remote Supervision by our team of highly qualified & experienced leaders.
  • Provision of Accredited Assessors on Qualifying Expedition.
  • Individual Assessor Reports for each participant, including photos and comments, at end of Qualifying Expedition.
  • Camp site fees included in the price.
  • Use of BPE Group Equipment included (tents, stoves, safety fuel bottles, maps and map cases)

Expedition Admin Support

  • Expedition Office support from our dedicated full-time DofE Manager. This includes all paperwork to meet Licensed Organisation and Expedition Network approval requirements, such as:
    • Completion and submission of Red Forms (for Peak District Expeditions)
    • Completion and submission of Green Forms (for Wild Country Expeditions in any of the UK National Parks)
    • Generic & Specific Area Risk Assessments
    • Liaison with Licensed Organisations and Operating Authorities
    • Arranging and booking of camp sites
  • Expedition On-Call Support – dedicated “home contact” support during expeditions.
  • All our Expedition leaders hold a minimum of Mountain Leader (Summer) qualification, are First Aid qualified, have a clean enhanced DBS clearance, and are DofE Accredited Assessors.
